The Female Grammar School had 256 female students, and instruction was likewise carried out by 24 teachers. The principal of the Female Grammar School was V. Levitsky. During the Second World War, a tuition fee of 200 dinars per month was charged. 13 Professors of the Russian-Serbian Gymnasium in Belgrade before World War II Teaching in grammar schools located in the premises of the Russian House took place under difficult conditions: there was no heating, and colds among students and teachers were frequent. This first school year during the occupation was the most difficult. The grammar school ceased to receive state subsidies and thereafter operated at its own expense, which meant that education became highly costly. We experienced many hardships—we suffered from cold and malnutrition… We looked forward to the long break when we would receive a bowl of warm soup. Upon returning home, the same picture awaited us. But youth had its way, and all obstacles were overcome. Even so, in our youth we still desired entertainment; we gathered in homes and danced to a gramophone, but for me it was by no means a cheerful party . 14 During the war years, students of the grammar schools learnt Russian, Serbian, Latin, German or French, singing, drawing, calligraphy, handicrafts, gymnastics, mathematics, chemistry, geography, botany, biology, hygiene, religious instruction, history, and philosophy. 15 From the curriculum it is evident that greater attention was devoted to the natural sciences. The Male Grammar School possessed a library and teaching aids, as well as a church where all state and religious holidays were celebrated. Within the Grammar School there also operated the Russian Association, which organized sports training, a music section, a grammar-school amateur choir, and activities related to Russian history. 16 During October and November 1942, the gymnasium hall was used to 13 Timofeev A.
